Day 122 Clyde, Waikouaiti

Prior to heading for Palmerston we took a short detour over to the town of Clyde which houses the large Hydro-Electric dam.

Clyde Dam

Clyde, like Alexandra, was founded during the Central Otago Gold Rush and today is a popular tourist spot.  The town has managed to preserve some of the old buildings from the early gold rush day.

We left Clyde and headed back towards Palmerston which was on the coast and it was a pleasurable drive. It was a little longer than expected as we stopped to help a cyclist who was on a 70 kilometer group ride.  He had cramped up and was slowly limping along waiting until someone came back for him.  We offered to help him catch up with the race and he accepted.  The only problem was he did not know the route and after driving about 30 kilometers we realized that we were not going to find the rest of the race.  So, we ended up driving 60 kilometers back towards Alexandra to the starting point and his car.
The rest of the drive was direct to Palmerston with a short stop for lunch and pictures.

Upon reaching Palmerston we decided to turn south to Waikouaiti.  There was a holiday park close to the beach and we wanted to stay there for the night.  We had planned to take a walk on the beach but it looked like it was going to rain so I washed the van instead.  We ended up just relaxing for the night.
