Day 25 Waipoua Forest and The Kauri Museum

We are leaving Hokianga Harbor today but before we left we wanted to thank our gracious and charming hosts, Harry and Jenny for their hospitality.

They are the owners and operators of Opononi Holiday Park Camp.  We called it the Camp with the View.

We also wanted to thank Captain Harry for the feed of Snapper he gave us, but he was out fishing, again!  Harry, you have to teach me how you do this.  You go fishing everyday and Jenny stays back and takes care of the camp.  Good gig.  You are a lucky man and you have a keeper in Jenny.

Harry, by the time I got around to writing this we had finished supper. The feed of Snapper was delicious and I cooked it just the way you suggested.  Of course we ate it all so don't be surprised if we show up at your door begging handouts.  Once again, we really appreciated the fish and the hospitality.

Once we left the camp we headed south on Hwy 12 which took us through the Waipoua Forest.  The road through the forest is quite closed in and there are no shoulders.

Prior to leaving the forest we came to a road that led to an overview so we followed it to the top.  There was a structure that allowed you to get a better view of the Waipoua Forest and surrounding area.

The rest of the early afternoon was spent driving to the town of Matakohe where the Kauri Museum is located. We spent the rest of the day in the Museum which provided a stimulating insight into the Kauri history and showed how the settlers harvested both the timber and the gum of these giant trees.  It gave a very realistic picture of what life was like in early New Zealand. It was a very informative afternoon.

Upon exiting the Museum we drove a very short way up the road to the campsite we had picked to stay at for the night.  After getting set up and having a relaxing cup of tea I got supper going.  We were having Harry's fresh caught Snapper and as stated early it was extraordinary.  Shortly after supper we called it a night.  Not sure what we are planning to do tomorrow.
