Day 141 (Friday, February 18) was a beautiful day. More sun and quite hot. I am not complaining. We did a little grocery shopping and started out of town. We passed these trees on the way and I had to stop and take a picture.
It was such a nice clear day that we decided to do a little back tracking to try and see some of the sights we missed coming into Kaikoura. So we headed south towards the Alpine Pacific Triangle. However, before we got out of town, we came across a young fellow with a Canadian Flag and his thumb out. So we stopped and invited him to join us for a few miles.
Dave is from Niagara on the Lake which is just down the road from Toronto. He is here for a year on a work visa.
Once Dave got settled we continued our journey on the Alpine Pacific Triangle which had us cutting inland on Highway 70 that would take us to Waiau. We then turned due east and headed back for the coast. In turning at Waiau we actually only did about one half of the triangle but it covered what we had missed in the rain and fog on our way up. When we reached Highway 1 we had intended to head north ago but we were in the middle of nowhere so we jogged a little further south to Cheviot. We thought that this would give Dave a better chance to get another ride. So we said goodbye to our fellow countryman and wished him well.
Dave was heading to Christchurch to look for a job. We are not sure if he stayed there or carried on. Hopefully he is okay and missed the earthquake. Dave, if you happen to read this blog drop us a note and let us know you are OK.
We had lunch in Cheviot and then pointed our noses north and Kaikoura. The day and the drive to this point were very stimulating.
The drive from Cheviot was also very interesting. We travelled through some pretty hilly farmland before hitting the Pacific Coast. We then followed the coast and I mean followed the coast right into Kaikoura. We decided to stop there for the night and went back to the same campground that we stayed in for the last few nights.
It was one of the better days we have had in awhile with the both the weather and the surrounding scenery co-operating fully.
